Stable and Growing

You expect too much

Posted on March 9, 2026March 9, 2026 by Bill Rowley

That’s a phrase I hear often:
“Our people just can’t give at that level.”

It’s usually said gently. Thoughtfully. Protectively.

And I understand the instinct.

But here’s what I’ve seen over and over: Underestimating your donors caps your campaign before it ever starts. Funny thing is — people often surprise you when they’re invited into something bigger than themselves.

Capacity is rarely the real issue.
Inspiration is.

Stretch gifts come from an affinity with the vision.
From confidence in the organization.
From donors who believe the future is worth investing in.

When we lower the goal because we’re afraid to ask, we quietly communicate something:

We don’t think our people are capable of more.

And they feel that. That hurts both your people and your vision.

Never pre-decide someone else’s generosity.

Share the vision.
Invite participation.
Let them decide.

If you’re concerned your people can’t fully fund the need, we should talk.

You might be right.

Or you might be surprised.
