The Core Problem (Ignorance + Urgency)
In my experience, two forces drive most premature capital campaigns:
1) Misunderstanding
2) Urgency
Let’s start with misunderstanding.
Many boards think:
“We already fundraise… how different can this be?”
Very.
A capital campaign funds what your operating budget can’t.
Which means:
→ New strategy
→ New donor expectations
→ New systems
→ New leadership alignment
It’s closer to launching a new initiative than running a bigger annual fund.
Then there’s urgency.
A building opportunity appears.
A donor shows interest.
A need becomes visible.
And suddenly…
“We need to move now.”
Urgency has a way of making unprepared organizations feel ready.
It clouds judgment.
It skips steps.
It replaces planning with optimism.
And optimism is not a strategy.
The result?
Campaigns built on energy…
instead of infrastructure.
Next post, I’ll walk through the first major thing organizations skip:
The roadmap.
