You won’t know what kind of board you’re on…
until something goes wrong.
Every nonprofit will face a crisis.
Financial shortfall.
Leadership transition.
Public controversy.
An unexpected external shock.
And here’s what I’ve observed—both as a board member and a nonprofit founder:
Boards that governed well before the crisis navigate it far better than those that didn’t.
Crisis doesn’t create problems.
It exposes what was already there:
→ Clarity of roles (or confusion)
→ Trust between the board and the Executive Director (or fracture)
→ Courage to act (or paralysis)
→ Culture of transparency (or silence)
The warning signs are almost always visible in advance:
🚩 Financial reports that are late or unclear
🚩 An ED who seems isolated or burned out
🚩 Board members going around organizational leadership
🚩 A culture where questions aren’t welcomed
Crisis is not the enemy.
Unexamined risk is.
The boards that handle crises best are the ones that treat every quiet meeting as preparation.
Preparation reduces panic.
Good governance is crisis prevention.
💬 Have you seen a nonprofit navigate a crisis well—or struggle?
What made the difference?
